Recently, Shanghai QiYao Environmental Technology Co., Ltd.(SMDERI-QET), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), successfully completed the sea trial of its first Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling system(iCER), paired with a WinGD 9X92DF-2.0 iCER dual-fuel main engine. The system was installed on the first 16,000 TEU ultra-large container ship built by Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited. (GSI) for Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.(MSC). After an 11-day dual-mode sea trial combining oil and gas operations, the system completed commissioning and inspection within 24 hours, earning high praise from the shipowner, shipyard, and all stakeholders.

This sea trial of the iCER system injects fresh momentum into the global maritime industry's green transition. Equipped with intelligent exhaust gas recirculation control technology and an advanced water treatment module, the system enables flexible switching between fuel oil and gas modes, fully complying with IMO Tier III emission standards and significantly reducing nitrogen oxides and carbon emissions. As the first iCER system to pass sea trial validation successfully, its breakthrough application marks a critical milestone for SMDERI-QET in the field of marine environmental protection technology.

During the trial, the project team faced the dual challenge of complex sea conditions and intensive commissioning tasks. Commissioning engineers and technical staff remained on-site throughout, executing hour-by-hour planning to ensure timely completion of system validation within the limited time window. During the joint commissioning phase in particular, the team optimized resource allocation and adopted a "shipowner–classification society joint acceptance mechanism," ensuring all components passed on the first attempt, with key performance metrics significantly exceeding design expectations.
This successful sea trial not only lays a solid foundation for the subsequent delivery of GSI’s 16,000 TEU container vessels but also underscores SMDERI-QET’s technological leadership in green ship propulsion solutions. The project team stated that this experience would serve as a blueprint for accelerating the deployment of iCER systems across more vessel types, delivering "lower emissions and higher efficiency" green solutions for shipowners worldwide.
