1.5t LNG Sub-cooling System (LSC) Order Signed: SMDERI-QET and Hudong Zhonghua Join Forces to Drive LNG Industry Chain Localization

On March 18, SMDERI-QET signed an order with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. for a "1.5t  LNG Sub-cooling System (LSC) Factory Test", marking a major step forward in their strategic partnership to promote localization of the offshore LNG industry chain.

As China’s first cryogenic engineering test center for the offshore LNG industry chain, the facility uses LNG or liquid nitrogen as test media to support performance validation of multiple core LNG components. It can meet cryogenic equipment testing needs for LNG carriers up to 270,000 m³ and 24,000 TEU container ships.

LSC serves as a critical component of the cargo system on LNG bunkering and transport vessels. It utilizes the cold energy produced via nitrogen-helium compression and expansion to sub-cool LNG, which is then sprayed back into the cargo hold to achieve re-liquefaction of boil-off gas (BOG). This approach avoids the economic loss and greenhouse gas emissions caused by direct BOG combustion, maintains optimal tank temperature and pressure, and reduces BOG generation at the source. The LSC features high operational stability and efficiency, safety, reliability, and long maintenance-free intervals.

In recent years, SMDERI-QET has focused extensively on clean energy and pioneered the development of core marine equipment such as LNG Fuel Gas Supply System (FGSS)Methanol Fuel Supply System (MFSS), and LNG Sub-cooling System (LSC). The company is also advancing R&D of innovative energy-saving technologies, including high-capacity LSCAmmonia Fuel Supply System (AFSS), and integrated LNG cold/heat power generation systems. Major breakthroughs have been made in dynamic cryogenic process simulation, magnetic bearing control, high-speed permanent magnet motors, and optimized the efficient control of LNG tank pressure, effectively reducing economic losses and greenhouse impacts caused by the direct combustion of BOG.

SMDERI-QET will leverage the cryogenic engineering test center to validate its self-developed 1.5t/h LSC, accelerating technological upgrades, performance improvements, and onboard deployment of key LNG equipment. Using the test center as a launchpad, the two companies will jointly establish an integrated innovation chain covering “R&D – Testing – Real-ship Application,” injecting green momentum into the LNG industry’s high-quality development and supporting the maritime sector’s low-carbon transformation.
